HiFi Test awards Edwards Audio MM4 MK2 “Top Class 1.0” and praises its musical drive

German magazine HiFi Test (Issue 4/2025) has published a highly positive review of our Edwards Audio MM4 MK2 moving-magnet phono preamplifier, conferring a Class rating of “Top Class 1.0” alongside a “Very good” price/performance verdict. Reviewer Alexander Rose-Fehling highlights the MM4 MK2’s engaging presentation and build quality, noting that it “really makes music – with drive, pace and air.”

Refined design, serious engineering

The new MM4 MK2 moves to a folded steel chassis (replacing the earlier acrylic case) while retaining an elaborate internal linear power supply with a toroidal transformer and separate positive/negative rails. The circuit employs tight-tolerance Vishay MELF resistors, Panasonic FM electrolytics, and Vishay film capacitors – uncommon attention to parts quality at this price. SRP: €599.

Lab performance at a glance

  • Gain: ~43 dB (ideal for most MM cartridges)
  • Noise: –80 dB(A) S/N
  • Channel separation: –73.6 dB(A)
  • THD: 0.04% (at 5 mV / 1 kHz)
  • RIAA accuracy: active bass / passive treble network, ±0.25 dB
  • Power consumption: 2.4 W
These measurements underscore the MM4 MK2’s low noise, strong separation and accurate equalisation.

Listening impressions

In comparative listening, the MM4 MK2 consistently delivered dynamic, transparent sound with excellent timing across classical, rock and jazz selections, showing subtle yet repeatable gains in clarity and soundstage over its predecessor.
